Well I’ve written several half-developed thoughts but they all wind up demanding much longer discussions than what I prefer to do here (or wind up going nowhere or needing more reflection) but I again have lots of great links to pass along. As always, finding good stuff to consider is much easier than coming up with something new.
First, a fun one. Family Handyman has published a collection of hilariously outdated projects from their own archive.
The medical history podcast Sawbones is often fascinating, I especially liked this episode about a disease outbreak that occurred in the online game World of Warcraft and what it can teach us about real life outbreaks.
I grew up reading Amelia Bedelia books and I loved this countercultural reading of those books in the New Yorker.
I have seen several folks link to this NYT piece about diet culture. One topic I’d love to address better in my Health Communication course is discourses about “healthy” and “unhealthy” foods. I first got thinking about it when I was amused by the range of recipes labeled “healthy” or “healthy version” in pinterest and my sort of haphazard exposure to fat acceptance and intuitive eating discourses has increasingly led me to believe that while nutrition is important, moralizing God’s good gift of food is also unhealthy. Although my relationship with food/weight/etc is less fraught than many, I’m still a woman in society so I have… feelings. I think we’d probably all do well to be more joyful and less legalist about eating.
Last, this long Sarah Bessey piece for Pride Month about her journey to being affirming has some parallels to my own. I can’t point to a specific moment or experience, but I can name several friends whose callings are clear to me. I don’t claim to have all the answers to the specifics of a christian sexual ethic for everyone, but then, I don’t claim to have all the answers about much.
As usual, you can reply to this email to reply to me directly. This newsletter is free and you are welcome to forward it along if someone else might enjoy it.
